What Is Memory Foam?

Memory foam is polyurethane combined with additional chemicals aimed at increasing the material's resistance, durability and density. In many instances, the material is designed to react not simply to pressure and weight, but also to body temperature. As a result, high density memory foam will react to body heat, reshaping to mold against the body. However, even low density memory foam will comply with pressure and quickly reshape against one's form. Due to the density of memory foam, it is often much more supportive but also heavier. Various comfort levels are available for the material and range in measurements known as the indentation force deflation rating.

Originally developed in 1966 by NASA, memory foam was intended to improve aircraft cushion safety. However, as the years have stretched on, memory foam made its way into the public open market by the 1980's and is now used for a variety of causes. In addition to being used to create top-of-the-line mattresses for humans, the material has found its way into the home as a luxury bed for four-legged friends in recent years. By providing an extremely stable and durable basis for a comfy bed, more and more pet owners are looking to memory foam dog beds as a way to provide for and assist their beloved furry family members.
